Zweckentfremdet wird sie auch zum Identitätsschutz / zur Vermummung verwendet und wird in diesem Zusammenhang manchmal auch Hasskappe/Hassmaske genannt.

Eine Sturmhaube
(Sturmmaske, Skimaske, Schlupfmütze, Hasskappe, Balaklava, Balaclava etc.) ist
eine den ganzen Kopf und den Hals umhüllende Kopfbedeckung, die entweder nur das
Gesicht oder auch nur Augen und Mund freilässt.
In den
achtziger Jahren wurden (Sturm)Hauben und Helme oft von den sogenannten 'Autonomen' bei Demonstrationen
benutzt, um sich vor unerwünschten Fotos und eventueller Strafverfolgung zu
schützen. Dies führte zum Vermummungsverbot (siehe auch: Versammlungsgesetz Österreich und 'Schutzwaffen'), wodurch die 'Hasskappe' zumehmend seltener auf Demonstrationen zu sehen ist; dei Formen haben sich geändet.
